Portraits of Women

A series of abstract sculptures that bring together two distinct facets of my work – the representation of faces and a fascination with dynamic 3 dimensional forms. At the core of this series is a bust; a head and shoulders formed out of an abstract donut, also known as a torus, that stands vertically atop a base. The opening in the center offers interesting spatial opportunities. When it is combined with recognizable human features such as noses, eyes, and lips it becomes suggestive of metaphors of emotional states. The complex, organic shapes are made up of segments that curve in all 3 dimensions creating a sense of movement and time.
The features of a face are immediately recognizable as are what I call the ‘other face’, the labia and anus which are equally unique and identifiable. Both have distinct architecture that define them. This layering of scale- the overall shape of a bust and then the more micro elements of facial features is a rich landscape for my explorations. The sculptures are glazed white and beige with an occasional pink, a color that resonates with me both for its softness and its suggestion of erotic zones. These parts of the body that are red, show the many blood vessels below because they don’t produce as much melanin as other parts of the skin. They are more delicate, vulnerable and sensitive.
