Pink Matter
Pink Matter is a series of hand-built ceramic sculptures in which pink replaces white as the artist’s ground color, a glaze that is visceral and flesh-like, layered in varying densities over iron oxide washes to create a range of fleshy tones. Hands press on passive faces, pry open heads, and grip from outside, standing in for the other person whose words and force get inside us. The works give form to the psychological war that erupts when our triggers collide with those of the people closest to us, and when we say things we don’t mean. That conflict is both the worst hell and the biggest illusion, and here it is given a safe place to live without harming anyone. Of the triad of mind, body, and emotion, the body is the part we can see, so these sculptures use it to show what feelings feel like.
