A Woman’s Other Face
The sexual organs like the face are unique.
Our feelings of desire are ruled by forces at conscious and unconscious levels. Viewing these private areas touches upon the physical manifestation of desire and arousal. Inside the lacquered black boxes are studies of sexual organs. To one’s sexual partner, the vulva and anus are the second most identifiable part of the female body similar to the face with its openings to the outside.

Humans, animals, plants, all species have sexual organs used to procreate. Humans have soft flesh, mouths in which we feed/fuel our bodies and the waste exits through our anus, male and female body parts come together like a lock and a key, entering inside of the female lips or the anus. Male and male encounters, female, female, hermaphrodites all are part of the range of human sexuality.
Sexual encounters can be functional or sacred. We are moved by our instincts and hormones to crave sexual connection and encounters. Mostly these moments of sexual joining of intimate connection are shared by the participants of the act and are performed in private. The location of a woman’s sexual organs makes it difficult for her to see them. So although her partner is intimately familiar with them, often a woman herself is not. I wanted to show other women that they had not realized how alluring their body could be in these positions.

As humans we have layers of emotion and as a society there are sexual norms that prevail and frame our view of who we are permitted to have sex with, when and where. There is no other bodily function that is so judged and regulated, so hidden away.
As I began to really look at the sexual organs of a female I realized how little many of us know of their anatomy, of the range of shapes and sizes. I began to appreciate them as one would a flower, I began to appreciate all of the shapes around the vulva, the inner and outer lips, the anus, the connection of the thigh to the torso, the curve in the inner thigh that reveals the vulva and the positions in which one opens the body to invite sexual contact.

These positions and hyper sensitivity are not a place in which we live all day long, they are places to visit, to dip into the well of sexuality which makes one feel young and alive. In these black lacquer boxes are studies of women opening themselves to the awaiting partner. The viewer is implied and the female form is devoid of a face or head or arms, she is only her sexuality, in some ways she objectifies herself, all that she is in that moment is desire. In other ways it is a moment to appreciate and reval in the beauty of this “Other Face”.
